UPDATE (Sept. 22nd): Buffy Sainte-Marie is the winner of the 2015 Polaris Music Prize for her album Power in the Blood.

Tonight’s 2015 Polaris Music Prize Gala marks the tenth anniversary for Canada’s prestigious music award, one that comes with a significant cash prize [50k] in honoring the Best Canadian Album of the past year based on artistic integrity. Whatever your opinion may be regarding this often contentious contest judged by an elite class of hand selected music critics, it’s the best media-backed, high profile platform this country has when it comes to shining a light on musical artists of the highest order, those deserving of our utmost attention. In a Music Industry that thrives on the capitalist model of album sales propogated by fans of mainstream mediocrity, it is essential that we recognize the musicians and songwriters who push the boundaries of their art to create something extraordinary, whether it’s the low-fi noise-punk of controversially-named Viet Cong and their widely lauded self-titled Debut, the epic alternative electro-pop of BraidsDeep In The Iris [my favorite] or the experimental-Rap-fusion from jazz trio BadBadNotGood‘s collaboration with Ghost Face Killah called Sour Soul – this is music to marvel at, be mesmerized by, and be thankful there’s a national stage by which to praise it. You can stream a Live broadcast of the event via CBC Music
